A 4th generation farm dedicated to heritage, sustainability, and the premise that all life is simple and connected.

Hey yall : ) I am sorry for bugging you two days in a row, but I wanted to inform you of our decision about poultry for this year. We will be raising pastured poultry on a good sized scale at Foxfire Holler! yay ! I do love my chickens !
We are now pre selling Foxfire Holler pastured poultry ... This will work a bit like a CSA .. same premise anyway ..

The regular price will be $6.50 a pound, processed, packaged and whole or cut up . But wait! there's more ! If you pre pay now .. the price will be $50 and you will receive 12 pounds of poultry beginning about the middle of May ( a savings of 28 dollars) $100 bucks gets you 24 pounds of meat. It don't get any cheaper than that folks! The only way I could make this any better is to loan out GiGi to fry it for you, but she might not like me much if I did that . We will be on a bi weekly schedule of production .. so you can choose to get your birds fresh or frozen at any time during the summer.
We were toying with the idea of doing a CSA with veggies and meat this summer.. But CSA's scare me, and yesterdays thunderstorm killed that idea for me, maybe next year I will take the plunge. Thunder in February means frost in May, you know!

Call or email me please, Your response will allow me to know how many, as well as what breed of chickens to plan on raising through the season .. Thank you all so much for your support of Foxfire Holler! Nancy & the critters : )

Hey yall : ) I know it's been a long time since I've spoken with you .. I apologize ! It has been a long winter.. thankfully spring is on its way. My great grandpa Wiley Elliott always said that the peep frogs had to sing through glass 3 times before it was over ... Heard them once already! Maybe it's going to be an early spring!

A few things are on the agenda for this season .. First thing I want to tell you about is that we have sausage again ! Our very own Foxfire Holler pastured pork .. and it is truly delicious .. I have tried all the cuts this week and I haven't heard one complaint from my test crew here at the farm : ) To keep it simple .. all of the meat is $6 a pound. You can order it by calling me at 336-384-9463 and I can meet you somewhere with it.. Or you are more than welcome to come to the farm to get it.. The winter has really torn up the driveway and when its muddy its bad ! bring a 4X4 if its wet outside !
I have Mild sausage in one pound packs and Italian sausage in the casings .. I didn't have hot made because our family just adds a little cayenne to it if we want it spicier :) We also have tenderloin.. loin chops and sliced ham ... and it's ALL fork tender and really yummy !

We are trying to make a decision about whether to do a CSA this year with veggies ... I would like your input , and also to know whether you would be willing to put in a few hours here and there to barter off some of the cost ?

We bought our milk cow back ! I had had her for years ..and I had to sell her about 3 years ago .. Well I got her back and she is due to freshen within the month ! we are so excited about fresh milk !

Our Tamworth sow, Blossom, her belly is nearly dragging the ground .. I would say we will have piglets within the week : )

We are lambing right now .. It started off slow with a bobcat problem .. we should still hit an 80% lambing rate this year tho .. Lord willing !

I miss you all .. think about you a LOT ... Nancy and the critters : )

Hey yall, I have tried many times over the course of the last few days to write this note.. and failed as many.
It is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that my Mama's breast cancer (to bone) is once again active... She has a broken hip bone that they are going to try to repair with surgery on Tuesday..Many of you are aware that her health played a major role in my decision to move the store. Now I realize that I was foolish to think that I could manage a business at all and take care of her properly.. And she deserves my best. Long ago I made a commitment to my Mama and Daddy to take care of them at home as long as at all possible, and to make sure that they were treated with all the respect for their dignity that I could manage.
With that being said, Spin A Yarn is closing for the foreseeable future, and perhaps permanently. I hope.. if her health allows to be able to teach some classes from my home studio, and of course Foxfire Holler Farm Meats will continue on and be sold from here. I feel very blessed to know each and every one of you, and count you among the wonderful friends that I have made in the last five years. Ashe County Fiber Folks (also known as The Baafia and the Board of Directors) tell me that they aren't giving up Wednesday gathering..just moving it here to my house. That makes me very happy , and yall are ALL welcome any time you want to stop by.
We will be closing up this week, the Wednesday gathering will take place as usual at Mtn Home Utopia from 10-5 but I will be at Wilkes General hospital with Mama all week for her surgery.. she is to get a pick line? on Monday because her Portacath is no longer working... then hip replacement on Tuesday followed by a few days in the hospital, then back home or to a nursing home for rehab for a week or 2, depending on how strong she feels when it's time to leave the hospital. The reason for telling you all that is to explain why I won't be in town this week to tell you goodbye. Thank you for all your hugs and love through the last few years... thank you for the support you gave me when Larry died... thank you for everything... May God bless you... Nancy

PS..My home number is 336-384-9463, A health food store is going to move into my old shop on the backstreet (YAY!) And they want to take over the building the first of October, which means I need everything out this week.. If you have anything at all stored there I need you to pick it up.. I will be working there all day tomorrow and someone with a key will be around about all week long, but I will NOT be in town after tomorrow (Sunday) at all. Love you !

Hey yall : ) It is a gorgeous day in downtown West Jefferson... Wish you were here!
I just wanted to update yall on our new digs down on Jefferson Avenue. This is turning out to be a very good move for us... and next week we will start work on the shop at the farm ... Remember Wednesday is still Ashe County Fiber Folks, meeting in the new place at 8A S Jeff Avenue. We are next to Sweet and Savory Bakery and 2 doors from Good Ol Day's bakery...this is dangerous !
I made a trip over to Miss Babs dye studio last week... oh gosh... yall gotta come see what I got ... Lots of colors in the Yowza Whattaskeins ( washable merino 560 yard skein) Lots of colors of washable fingering weight too ... and fiber Oh my gosh ! We also got that superbulky 2 stitches per inch Bear Creek yarn that we carried last winter from Kramer yarns, great for quick projects ... Claudia Handpaints too ... yummy stuff.
Call me please to schedule a spinning or weaving class ... yall know I don't like to do more than one or 2 students and so I just teach on demand : )

I hope you get a chance to get outside and enjoy this awesome day ! Love .. Nancy

Hey yall : ) After a couple late niters, I am pleased to announce that Spin A Yarn is now open in our new location at 8A South Jefferson Avenue! Please help me spread the word that we are now sharing space with Mountain Home Utopia and Simply Ashe Gallery ! We are occupying mostly the rear end of the store ( that's me, always bringing up the hind end ! ) We are located between Sally May's and Sweet and Savory Bakery. I sincerely hope that you will find the same smiles and sense of community here that we tried to achieve in the Backstreet store. I will personally be in the store on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.. Chrissy will be around on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Tom Phillips (MHU owner) will be here with his strange sense of humor most all the time... He may not know much about yarn, but he won't let you leave without laughing! You can still get our great farm grown natural meats, Heritage Homestead Cheese, eggs, and Fishel's Moravian Chicken Pies in our new shop.

Don't forget our Grand Opening is this coming Saturday, August 28... We will be celebrating with a Yarn Tasting at 6PM ... Lots of great surprises await :) I hope you can join us !
Our new phone number is 336-844-4771 .. Love to all, and thank you so much for your wonderful support, Nancy

Hey yall : ) I took a week and played hooky ! Had a great week camping at the Galax Fiddlers Convention. I am now home and feeling much more like taking on the world. I want to thank everyone that came and made the High Country Farm Tour a complete success last weekend!! I don't know bout yall, but we sure had a blast!
The first project I need to tackle is the moving of the store... and the more I look at that the more I realize there is just an overwhelming amount of "stuff" to move , so starting tomorrow.. August 17th, I am on a mission to reduce inventory, fixtures and well .. just stuff! So .. Meats (excluding poultry) are 30 % off... all yarns are 40% off ... I have a quantity of slatwall fixtures and shelving and such that I will be selling at a "make me an offer" price !
Our poultry labels came, so beginning tomorrow we will have chicken in the shop for sale , raised naturally and completely free range here at Foxfire Holler. They weigh 2-3 pounds each, and the price will be $6.50 a pound. Anyone that had a piece of Mama's fried chicken during the High Country Farm Tour can attest to the tastiness of our poultry !
We are so excited about our new plans, and hope that we can continue to serve you ! Nancy

Hey yall : ) Whew ... all I can say about this summer, this year... is "Wow.. What a ride!!!" It surely does seem like things are moving at the speed of light for the business and the farm this year, so I thought I would just take a moment and catch y'all up on stuff.
You may have heard that we are closing the store on Backstreet. Quite honestly, I am feeling more and more tugged in 3 directions.. family, shop and farm, since our lease is running out, this seems like as good a time as any to streamline things just a tad!
Here is the plan: We plan to leave an outlet in town so that you can run in and grab yarns, needles, tools and such. This will be located within Mountain Home Utopia ( where Skyland Books used to be on Jefferson Ave) We will have some classes there as well as our sit and knits and such. None of that will change : ) I know many of you have been concerned about losing the sense of community that makes Spin A Yarn a special place.. I believe we can keep that! I know that yall are what makes us special and so long as we don't lose you.. we won't lose community!
I reckon y'all have probably noticed that pavement is not my natural habitat... I tend to be nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs in town..And quite frankly, I want to be farming! So, the second part of our plan is to move a branch of the store to the farm .. now now, I hear y'all gasping .. but truly it's just 4 miles from the redlight in town to Foxfire Holler... now that's not so bad, is it ? At first we will be located in a building next to the house, then hopefully by next summer we will have the homeplace renovated and ready to house the business. Since I will be spending more hours farming, we can raise more products, and hopefully market to a wider audience. You will also be able to call me with an order for meats and other produce and I will deliver it to your home! We will be doing produce deliveries in the area, as well as having the products available here just like always. I am also discussing an outlet for our products out at The Bar
n on 221 in Fleetwood. We are very excited about that, so stay tuned!
Part three of our plan is Agritourism, and education.. We are going to be holding workshops ( 1 day, 3 day, 1 week.. weaving, spinning, living off the land...the sky's the limit here) This winter we are going to erect some small, primitive cabins that will house folks who want to come and stay and take classes... I love letting folks come out and see the animals, it's such a nice feeling to see a child hold a chick for the first time... to plant a seed.. to learn where their food comes from! Hopefully next season we will be hosting open house days on the farm a couple times a month, complete with activities and learning experiences for kids of any age!
This year we are trying our hand at raising free range chickens and turkeys for market. So far it's going really well ! We harvested several yesterday in a trial run, and were extremely pleased with the results!
Another new addition are our hogs... Tamworths are an old, heirloom breed that are wonderfully awesome to raise! Blossom and Bubba are producing beautiful offspring... we are well pleased !

In a couple other bits of news ... The High Country Farm Tour is coming up ! this is a yearly event put on by Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture, and is an awesome chance for you to tour many of the farms that you visit at the Ashe and Watauga Farmers markets every week! And this year.. tada ! Guess who's on the tour ? Foxfire Holler is ! We are very excited ( and nervous) about doing this, but I had a moment of insanity and applied .. and they accepted ...and now I am sure it is going to be a totally awesome weekend .. Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 both days...I am as yet unsure of what you will see at other farms, but we will have hands on fiber activities, and lots of demonstrators. Tickets and info will be available in the shop... I think last year it was $20 a carload to tour all the farms all weekend ... not a bad deal at all !
I am in need of volunteers for either or both days... if you are willing to sit on the porch and demonstrate your art for a couple of hours ... or work with younguns dying, felting weaving or spinning... or walk folks around the farm... Well that would be awesome.. I would love you forever and dance at your wedding! And in case you didn't know, that is also the weekend of the 40th annual Rotary Club Fiddlers Convention ( www.ashefiddlers.com) so don't forget to go out and listen to some great music at Ashe Park on Friday and Saturday !
We have planned our grand opening ( grand moving?) for the place in town for August 21st... we are going to celebrate with a yarn tasting : ) We would be so happy if you would plan to join us ! More details on that to follow :) I will try to keep the website and facebook updated with info on that : )
Just one more thing ( I promise! ) I am now taking preorders for turkey for the holidays ; ) Let me know if you want one and approximately what weight and I will put you on the list!

Love to you all ! Nancy and the family at Foxfire Holler Farm
